OpenAI has announced its first data center initiative in Europe, Stargate Norway, addressing the growing need for AI compute power across the continent. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the focus on clean, affordable energy in Narvik, facilitated through partnerships with Nscale and Aker. Stargate Norway aims to generate 230 MW of AI-enabled data capacity, ultimately targeting 520 MW, powered entirely by renewable energy and equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by 2026. This initiative positions Europe at the forefront of the global AI landscape. Similarly, in the U.S., initiatives such as President Trump’s $100 billion Stargate Project are also underway to enhance AI infrastructure. The Department of Energy is inviting private partnerships to leverage federal land for AI and energy development across several states. Stargate Norway will not only bolster AI advancements but also foster collaborations with academic institutions to enhance regional AI research and innovation, promoting long-term growth in Europe.
