4 Gen Z Perspectives on Why They Choose to Avoid AI

A growing segment of Gen Z is vocally opposing AI technologies, citing ethical and environmental concerns. Despite being the first “AI native” generation, not all young people embrace AI. A McKinsey study found millennials are more familiar and comfortable with generative AI than Gen Z. Four women from this demographic—Alexis, Cheyenne, Weezy, and Delaney—express their strong reservations about AI. Alexis, a marine biology student, highlights the environmental toll of data centers. Cheyenne, a former mental health worker, believes AI undermines human connection in therapy. Weezy, a florist, sees AI-generated art as harmful to her sales and community integrity. Delaney, a publicist, feels AI doesn’t enhance her work despite others using it for mundane tasks. This reflects a deeper divide within Gen Z regarding AI, emphasizing the need for ongoing discussions about technology’s role in society.
