Over the past six months, I’ve utilized ChatGPT for freelance journalism, primarily as a sophisticated thesaurus and fact-checking tool. It helps clarify medical terminologies, such as GLP-1 medications, providing quick and organized information. Despite its utility, I resist relying on AI for creative tasks, cherishing my personal creative process. During a recent Lunch and Learn, fellow freelancers revealed effective uses for AI, describing it as a “smart assistant” ideal for repetitive tasks like finding email addresses and drafting annotations. One participant praised AI for streamlining tasks that would otherwise consume days. However, privacy concerns arise when sharing original work. It’s crucial to be cautious, particularly with sensitive stories. Best practices include verifying AI-generated content, diversifying sources, and ensuring the accuracy of information, as AI can “hallucinate” or fabricate data. Overall, freelancers can benefit from AI while maintaining ethical standards and personal judgment.
