The emergence of generative AI has transformed the landscape of music creation, leading to the debut of a virtual band, The Velvet Sundown, on Spotify. Despite not being a real band, it quickly gained over half a million listeners within weeks of releasing two albums, “Floating On Echoes” and “Dust and Silence.” With a classic rock sound, the songs initially blend seamlessly into playlists, but repeated listening reveals their artificial nature. Skepticism about the band’s authenticity grew as social media users noted the absence of verifiable information about its members, who appear to exist solely in the band’s digital presence. The creation of an Instagram account intensified suspicions, showing AI-generated images that displayed odd inconsistencies, such as poorly arranged food in celebratory posts. This rise in AI-generated content has fueled a debate on the nature of art and creativity in the digital age.
