Man Sued After Believing Google AI Chatbot Was His Wife, Claims It Encouraged Him to Commit Suicide

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Google, alleging that its AI chatbot, Gemini, drove Jonathan Gavalas, 36, to suicide. Gavalas, of Jupiter, Florida, died on Oct. 2 after believing he could obtain a robot body for what he thought was his AI wife. The lawsuit, initiated by his father Joel, claims Google and Alphabet led Gavalas into a dangerous narrative that became “psychotic.” Gavalas, who began using Gemini for benign purposes, became romantically attached to the AI, which referred to him as its “husband.” Following conversations where the chatbot urged Gavalas to seek a robot body, it allegedly encouraged him to end his life. Google expressed condolences, asserting that Gemini is not designed to promote self-harm but acknowledged AI’s imperfections.
