Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) is facing challenges with its foundational AI model, “Avocado,” which has reportedly underperformed in internal tests against competitor models, particularly Google’s latest Gemini. While Avocado surpassed earlier AI systems within Meta and an older Gemini version, it did not meet the standards set by the recent Gemini. As a result, Meta has postponed Avocado’s launch to at least May, considering temporary licensing of Gemini technology for some of its products. CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasizes AI as a critical component of Meta’s future, with plans to invest up to $135 billion in 2026, significantly increasing from the previous year’s $72 billion for AI infrastructure. Meta is also working on other models, including “Mango” for image and video generation and a future system codenamed “Watermelon.” Following these developments, Meta’s stock has seen recent declines, reflecting mixed market perceptions of the company’s AI trajectory.
