On Wednesday, Block Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey endorsed Nvidia Corp.’s ambitious initiative to invest $26 billion in developing open artificial intelligence models over the next five years. These open-weight AI models will enable developers, researchers, and startups to download and customize essential AI components, facilitating use in various infrastructures. Nvidia aims to transition from a leading AI chip supplier to a key player in AI model development, putting it in direct competition with companies like OpenAI amid growing challenges from Chinese developers like DeepSeek and Alibaba Group, which release robust open models. Concerns are rising that AI development may shift toward non-U.S. chip ecosystems due to powerful Chinese models potentially utilizing Huawei hardware. Dorsey, a strong proponent of open technologies, praised Nvidia’s strategy, highlighting its importance for global developer access. This move follows Meta Platforms’ 2023 launch of the Llama model, which marked a shift in the open-source AI landscape.
