During a lightning talk at Health Journalism 2025, journalist LaVonne Roberts discussed the critical need for accurate media coverage of AI in health care, noting that current reporting often oscillates between overly optimistic and pessimistic views. Roberts emphasized the urgency of understanding AI’s role in clinical settings, highlighting that AI tools are already in use and significant investments are being made in health technology. To aid journalists in assessing AI tools, she introduced the acronym PIE, which stands for Problem, Implementation, and Evidence. Journalists should evaluate the real-world problems these tools address, their feasibility in clinical workflows, and the robustness of their evidence bases. She illustrated this with a successful AI model from NYU predicting hospital readmissions. Lastly, Roberts warned that a lack of clarity about a tool’s limitations could indicate insufficient significance for news stories.
