Google is set to launch its generative AI services in Hong Kong, beginning with the Gemini web app and eventually rolling out a mobile version for its chatbot and virtual assistant. This initiative will enable residents to access Google’s AI models directly, eliminating the need for virtual private networks (VPNs) or third-party services, which have been necessary due to regional restrictions. Michael Yue, managing director of Google Hong Kong, emphasized that expanding the Gemini experience will foster creativity and productivity, aligning with their goal of advancing Hong Kong’s innovation landscape. Gemini is a multimodal AI tool allowing interaction via text, images, and audio, featuring generative capabilities for multimedia content like images and music, empowering creators and students alike. This move addresses the compliance challenges that have led local users to rely on alternatives, providing an inclusive platform for all, while reinforcing Google’s commitment to a responsible, full-stack AI ecosystem in the region.
