Amazon’s efforts to integrate AI into workflows are reportedly hampering productivity, according to a recent The Guardian article. Employees indicate that they spend significant time correcting errors from internal AI tools instead of focusing on essential tasks. Despite management’s push for AI adoption—including direct suggestions and tracking systems—many workers express concerns about job security if they fail to comply. An Amazon spokesperson contested these claims, asserting that AI enhances creative opportunities and isn’t mandatory. Research from BetterUp Labs and Stanford University shows that AI integrations often result in more work, creating “workslop” and extending employee responsibilities beyond their roles. Concurrently, a University of California, Berkeley study highlighted that AI increases workload rather than alleviating it. Nevertheless, the drive to adopt AI persists, with major tech firms, including Amazon, projected to invest $600 billion to $700 billion in AI initiatives this year.
