Gautam Gambhir, a two-time World Cup winner and current head coach of India, has filed a civil suit in the Delhi High Court to combat digital impersonation through AI tools. He alleges that fake quotes and videos falsely depicting him have circulated widely on platforms like Instagram, X, and YouTube. Notably, one misleading video claiming to show his resignation amassed over 2.9 million views. The lawsuit implicates 16 defendants, including social media accounts and e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart, alongside technology companies such as Meta and Google. Gambhir seeks Rs 2.5 crore ($300,000) in damages and an injunction against further identity misuse, referencing India’s Copyright and Trade Marks Acts. This legal action comes amid increasing global concerns regarding AI-generated deepfakes. The case highlights escalating issues surrounding personality rights in the digital age, emphasizing the need for protective measures against identity theft.
