March Madness has taken over the App Store, dethroning popular AI applications like ChatGPT from the top downloaded app spot. This surge in sports-related apps has shifted the rankings, with CBS Sports leading the way, followed by ChatGPT, Claude, NCAA March Madness Live, and Google Gemini. The recent release of Perplexity’s Comet browser also stirred the rankings, briefly pushing Gemini out of the top three. Notably, Claude, which experienced newfound popularity after a stand against the U.S. Department of Defense, reached #1 before settling down to #3. The competition wasn’t just against AI apps; previous promotions, including a hamburger deal, couldn’t match the sports app’s appeal. Additionally, Apple has capitalized on this trend by integrating March Madness brackets into Apple Sports, which has seen record downloads coinciding with its inaugural F1 race weekend. Sports apps are clearly dominating the App Store landscape right now.
