Facebook Users Report Unauthorized Access to Camera Roll by Meta AI—Here’s How to Protect Your Privacy

Share

Facebook has introduced a feature that generates AI-created images from users’ camera rolls for Story suggestions in the app. If users enable this feature, they grant Facebook permission to continuously access their camera rolls, uploading selected photos to the cloud based on factors like time, location, or themes. While these AI-generated images are visible only to users as suggestions and are not automatically posted, concerns arise regarding data privacy. Currently, this feature is available only on the Facebook app for iOS and Android, not on PC or web versions. Some users have reported seeing AI-generated suggestions without receiving a pop-up about the feature, indicating they may have unintentionally agreed to it. To manage privacy, users can disable this feature in their app settings and restrict Facebook’s access to their photos. EU users received an opt-out email, but not responding may have been considered opting in.
