At a seminar on ‘Artificial Intelligence – Prevention and Resolution of Disputes,’ Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant emphasized that AI must enhance, not replace, human decision-making in the judicial system. Held in Bengaluru by the Karnataka Judicial Academy alongside various legal organizations, the seminar highlighted AI’s role in managing large data volumes, identifying patterns, and expediting procedures. However, Justice Kant cautioned against AI taking over crucial judgment phases, warning of risks surrounding transparency and accountability. He insisted that human judges should ultimately deliver judgments, guided by logic and experience. Meanwhile, Karnataka HC Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru discussed AI’s dual role, debating its benefits in predicting disputes and improving accessibility versus concerns about diminishing human oversight. Prashant Kumar, president of the Bar Association of India, noted AI’s potential to translate judgments into local languages, thus broadening access to legal resources for rural populations.
