Ensuring Accountability in AI: Why We Can’t Depend Solely on Companies and Governments

Currently, corporations impose internal rules inconsistently, while governments react based on political motivations. A crucial need exists for an independent, public interest accountability framework—a “third way” distinct from corporate self-regulation and state enforcement. This framework could include diverse oversight boards, civil-society organizations, and academic institutions collaborating to balance power. The article emphasizes that existing mechanisms like Meta’s Oversight Board, despite flaws, offer a model for effective independent governance. It advocates for binding authority in oversight, independent board appointments, proactive risk assessment, and diverse representation—all crucial for achieving genuine accountability. Moreover, transparency in decision implementation and funding sustainability is vital.
