The Department of Energy (DOE) is advancing AI integration into nuclear safety documentation through a project involving Everstar, Idaho National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and Microsoft. The initiative supports the Genesis Mission, aiming to boost AI use in scientific research. A spokesperson noted that AI tools would assist in drafting safety analyses for the National Reactor Innovation Center’s High Temperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) at INL. Everstar’s AI tool, Gordian, utilizes retrieval-augmented generation to ensure NRC compliance and minimize errors by anchoring outputs to source documents. This approach also allows for identifying inconsistencies across documents. Future phases include a pilot program for utilizing approved safety analyses in secure environments and developing a review tool to address discrepancies. Long-term goals include evolving document standards for better AI parsing and applying modular architecture for various regulatory documents. This project exemplifies a significant step toward enhanced nuclear safety and compliance through innovative AI solutions.
