OpenAI is redirecting its focus towards business applications of AI, stepping away from its previous “side quests” like an AI video generator and an adult-themed chatbot. This week, OpenAI announced the acquisition of Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), a weekday tech business show known for engaging discussions with industry leaders. CEO Fidji Simo emphasized TBPN’s marketing strength and its potential to foster meaningful conversations about AI advancements. Launched in October 2024, TBPN is often likened to ESPN for its technology coverage and has hosted luminaries such as Mark Zuckerberg and Mark Cuban. With daily viewership of 70,000 and projected revenues exceeding $30 million this year, TBPN aims to maintain its editorial independence, a commitment reiterated by OpenAI’s leadership. However, concerns about potential conflicts of interest continue to surface in discussions about media integrity and accountability. The move will be overseen by Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane.
