OpenAI is advancing toward a significant milestone: developing AI systems that can function like research interns. In a recent episode of the “Unsupervised Learning” podcast, chief scientist Jakub Pachocki highlighted breakthroughs in coding, mathematics, and physics, indicating AI’s potential to handle complex technical work autonomously. He emphasized that the measure of success lies in how long AI systems can operate without human input, aiming to create an “AI research intern” by September 2026, eventually transitioning to fully autonomous researchers by March 2028. Although progress is evident with tools like Codex managing coding tasks, Pachocki acknowledged that AI is not yet ready to function independently as a researcher. He pointed out that while the coding landscape has transformed, the immediate challenge remains developing systems capable of specific technical tasks autonomously. Transparency about the journey is crucial, as OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman noted the possibility of failure in their ambitious goals.
