A recent survey, the AI and Transformation of Media — Africa Readiness Survey 2026 by Broadcast Media Africa, reveals a compelling paradox in African media organizations: while 94% of leaders are AI-savvy, formal strategies and expertise are sorely lacking. Conducted across 23 media entities in sub-Saharan Africa, the survey highlights that only 11% have formal AI strategies, and 56% lack in-house expertise. Despite this, 75% plan to increase AI spending in the coming two years, indicating high ambition but low readiness. The primary use case for AI identified is translation and localization, essential for Africa’s multilingual context. As organizations recognize AI as a tool for enhancing content quality, the absence of clear guidelines—53% have none—poses risks. Infrastructure gaps, notably in cloud adoption, and budget-related challenges hinder effective AI deployment. Broadcast Media Africa urges the development of basic AI policies and calls on industry bodies to improve access to AI tools for media organizations.
