AI Discovers Paint Formula to Keep Buildings Cooler

Share

AI-engineered paint has the potential to mitigate urban heat islands and lower air-conditioning costs by keeping buildings significantly cooler. Researchers from universities across the globe, including the US, China, and Sweden, used machine learning to develop coatings that can reflect sunlight and emit heat more effectively than traditional paints, achieving temperature reductions of 5°C to 20°C. This innovation could extend beyond buildings to vehicles and electrical equipment as global temperatures rise.

In a peer-reviewed study published in Nature, it was shown that applying these new paints could save substantial electricity, equivalent to powering over 10,000 air conditioning units annually in hot cities. The incorporation of AI streamlines material design, enabling the creation of superior materials more efficiently than traditional methods. This technological advancement exemplifies a shift towards automated, AI-driven processes that can discover new materials with critical applications in energy efficiency and sustainability.
