Natasha Lyonne recently shared insights from a private conversation with the late director David Lynch about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking. Lyonne’s directorial debut, Uncanny Valley, will utilize AI through her studio Asteria, which aims to democratize Hollywood by blending traditional storytelling with advanced technology. Despite facing backlash from the creative community, Lyonne defended her initiative, emphasizing her goal to empower artists rather than let tech companies dictate the industry’s future. She recalled Lynch’s metaphor about AI being like a pencil—accessible to all, with its utility depending on the user’s creativity. Lynch had expressed optimism about AI as a creative tool while acknowledging potential downsides if profit becomes the primary focus. As of now, Uncanny Valley does not have a release date.
