Microsoft to Lay Off Up to 9,000 Employees Amid Increased Investment in AI

Microsoft plans to cut 4% of its 228,000 global workforce, marking the fourth round of layoffs in 2025. Previous reductions included 6,000 roles in May. The majority of the layoffs will occur in Redmond and Bellevue, Washington. Like other tech giants, Microsoft is pivoting towards AI development, having appointed AI pioneer Mustafa Suleyman to lead its new division. A Microsoft executive highlighted that the next fifty years will be significantly shaped by AI, impacting work and social interactions. Despite being a major investor in OpenAI, which created the widely used ChatGPT, Microsoft’s relationship with the company has reportedly soured, as it faces challenges in promoting its AI assistant, Copilot. As Microsoft sheds positions, other tech firms, such as Meta and Amazon, are actively recruiting top AI talent, with substantial offers, indicating a competitive landscape for skilled professionals in the AI sector.
