Microsoft has announced plans to lay off up to 9,000 employees, representing about 4% of its global workforce of 228,000. The job cuts will affect multiple divisions, with reports indicating that the Xbox gaming unit is among the impacted areas. Notably, two video game projects, the reboot of “Perfect Dark” and “Everwild,” have been canceled, and the studio behind “Perfect Dark,” The Initiative, will be closed. Job reductions have also been noted at Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 and Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios. This move is part of Microsoft’s strategy to shift focus towards artificial intelligence, with significant investments in data centers for training AI models. The company has undergone several rounds of layoffs in 2023, emphasizing that these changes are necessary for adapting to a dynamic marketplace while trying to attract top AI talent amidst growing competition from other tech firms.
