Why an AI-Driven Apollo 13 Rescue Mission Would Have Led to Tragedy for the Crew

The Apollo 13 rescue mission captivated my passion for engineering, showcasing a blend of harsh realities and human ingenuity. Although deemed a failure, the mission turned into a lesson in crisis management. An oxygen tank explosion crippled the command module, forcing the crew to adapt and improvise for survival. Critical improvisations included converting square CO₂ filters from the command module to round ones in the lunar module using makeshift materials like plastic bags and duct tape. Key traits that enabled engineers to manage this crisis included clear systems thinking, creative problem-solving, and effective communication under pressure. While current AI possesses some capabilities such as communication precision and partial creativity, it lacks the judgment, intent, and adaptive skills necessary for such complex problem-solving. Today’s engineers must learn to think clearly under constraints, prioritize hands-on skills, and embrace their unique human traits—flaws that often lead to innovative solutions.
