In Malawi, smallholder farmers can now access vital agricultural support instantly through the AI-driven app Ulangizi, meaning “advice” in Chichewa. This innovative tool, developed by Opportunity International Malawi, leverages AI models like ChatGPT alongside the nation’s official farming manual to offer real-time guidance on pest control, fertilization, and livestock care via WhatsApp. Designed to assist the majority of Malawi’s agricultural workforce, over 80% of whom are smallholder farmers facing limited access to expert advice, Ulangizi responds to inquiries through text, voice, or image. A 2023 IFPRI report highlighted that only 13% of farmers receive expert support regularly. Following Cyclone Freddy’s devastation, the app was instrumental in aiding displaced farmers to recover their crops. Opportunity International plans to enhance Ulangizi by adding support for more crops, languages, and offline features, with the aim of ensuring every Malawian smallholder farmer has access to essential agricultural knowledge.
