Morrisons has integrated Google’s generative AI model Gemini into its app, enhancing the shopping experience by allowing customers to locate products easily within stores. This innovation is part of Morrisons’ broader digital transformation strategy and has handled over 50,000 searches daily during peak times. The AI system effectively interprets typos, brand names, and vague descriptions, streamlining the search process without needing staff assistance. According to Morrisons’ data director, Peter Laflin, this tool alleviates frequent inquiries about product locations, benefiting both shoppers and employees. Developed entirely in-house using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, the app reflects Morrisons’ commitment to technological advancements. Additionally, the supermarket has been testing “tally” robots in various locations to monitor stock levels, demonstrating its ongoing investment in innovative solutions to enhance customer service and optimize operations.
