UF Unveils AI Tool for Enhanced Crop Damage Detection

Share

The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, led by AI scientist Nikolaos Tziolas, is launching an innovative project to enhance agricultural insights through a conversational AI platform. Funded by a $297,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this initiative integrates satellite imagery with an accessible chat-based interface, designed for both smartphone and computer users. The platform aims to provide farmers and Extension agents with quick, intuitive access to critical satellite data to assess flooding and crop health post-storm.

Similar to ChatGPT but focused on agriculture, users can ask questions like, “How much of my farm is flooded?” This tool streamlines traditional assessment methods that are costly and slow, particularly crucial during extreme weather events such as hurricanes. By harnessing AI for crop damage assessment, the project seeks to optimize operations, lower costs, and improve resilience, responding effectively to fast-evolving agricultural crises.
