OpenAI Alleges Nonprofit Breached Lobbying Regulations, Links to Musk Emergent

Share

OpenAI has filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), alleging that the Coalition for AI Nonprofit Integrity (CANI) violated state lobbying laws and has undisclosed ties to Elon Musk. The complaint, reported by Politico, comes after OpenAI sought to subpoena CANI regarding its funding and any links to Musk, who has publicly criticized OpenAI’s restructuring. CANI supported a bill potentially hindering OpenAI’s business plans, prompting the legal action. OpenAI’s attorney, Ann O’Leary, requested an immediate investigation into CANI’s alleged violations of the Political Reform Act. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has claimed the company strayed from its original mission to serve public interests following its restructuring plans. While some of Musk’s related lawsuits were dismissed, others are set for trial next year, reflecting ongoing tensions regarding OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit model.
