Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is set to acquire key talent and licensing from AI coding startup Windsurf, as reported by Bloomberg. Although Google won’t take equity in Windsurf, top executives, including CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen, will join Google’s DeepMind unit. Originally, Windsurf had a $3 billion acquisition deal with OpenAI, which collapsed due to conflicts over intellectual property rights with Microsoft, OpenAI’s major investor. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the exclusivity period for their acquisition offer had expired, allowing Windsurf to explore other options. Google spokesperson Chris Pappas emphasized the importance of Windsurf’s advanced AI capabilities, stating, “We’re excited to welcome some top AI coding talent to advance our work in agentic coding.” Founded in 2021, Windsurf has raised over $200 million from notable investors like Greenoaks Capital Partners and AIX Ventures, competing in the realm of AI-driven coding assistants.
