Navigating the Complexities of “AI for Good”
At this year’s AI for Good Summit, a stark reality unfolded. My keynote, titled “AI for Social Good: The New Face of Technosolutionism,” faced censorship just hours before I was set to speak. This experience revealed deeper issues about accountability and transparency in the tech industry.
Key Highlights:
- Censorship & Control: I faced pressure to alter my message, removing topics like Gaza, Palestine, and the term “genocide.” The final slide, advocating against “AI for War Crimes,” was deemed unacceptable.
- Professionalism in Question: Organizers failed to honor my submitted abstract and slides, resulting in last-minute stress and a lack of professionalism.
- Industry Over Public Good: The summit’s focus skewed heavily toward big tech, with less than 10% representation from academia and civil society.
This raises a crucial question: is AI for good, or merely good for big tech?
