Researchers at The University of Western Australia, in collaboration with Artrya, have introduced an innovative AI algorithm called the CAC-DAD score, significantly enhancing heart attack risk prediction. Dr. Gavin Huangfu notes that traditional coronary artery calcium scoring has limitations, as it overlooks the location of calcified plaques, which influences risk levels. The CAC-DAD score automatically evaluates plaque burden and accurately classifies highly dense, yet stable, plaques as low risk—streamlining the assessment process. Findings reveal the CAC-DAD score outperforms the conventional Agatston score, particularly for vulnerable populations during surgery. Professor Girish Dwivedi emphasizes that precise calcium scoring is crucial for tailored heart disease prevention strategies. This AI-driven tool promises to transform risk stratification, benefiting patient management across the medical community. Future validation in larger cohorts is anticipated to further establish its predictive capabilities. The project exemplifies successful collaboration between UWA and various health organizations, underscoring the importance of innovation in preventative healthcare.
