IIT Kharagpur has launched an innovative AI-powered emotional health monitoring tool to address an alarming rise in campus student deaths. This unique initiative enables anonymous self-check-ins and early alerts for mental health issues, aimed at fostering a supportive environment. Additionally, the institute will introduce the ‘campus mothers’ program, where faculty and staff wives, along with mental health experts, provide nurturing care to students in emotional distress. Named SETU (Support, Empathy, Transformation, and Upliftment), this wellness framework will initiate on July 25 during the new undergraduate induction. The secure app ensures the confidentiality of sensitive student data, enabling real-time responses from faculty and trained peers. With 20,000 students and limited mental health resources, this initiative aims to enhance the quality of campus life through technological integration and personal support, serving as a potential national model for other IITs. The commitment to student well-being is further reinforced by ongoing programs like Sarth, which enhance mental health services.
