In Spring 2025, UCLA established the Advisory Committee on AI in Teaching and Learning to navigate the transformative effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on education. According to the 2024 University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey, 66% of UCLA students utilized generative AI tools for tasks like brainstorming and studying throughout the academic year. The committee, comprising faculty, students, and staff, will provide strategic guidance on integrating AI responsibly into the curriculum while emphasizing AI literacy and accessibility.
Led by co-chairs Chris Mattmann and Kem Saichaie, the recommendation includes enhancing resources and training programs via the UCLA Teaching and Learning Center. Committee members, including experts from diverse academic fields, advocate for innovative adaptations in pedagogy to foster critical thinking and creativity. The initiative aims to ensure that AI elevates educational outcomes while addressing potential challenges in evaluation and learning.
