Kerala High Court Establishes Guidelines Banning AI Tools for Issuing Orders, Threatens Action for Non-Compliance

The Kerala High Court has prohibited the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, like ChatGPT, for issuing judicial orders. Special guidelines have been established to ensure judicial officers do not rely on cloud-based AI for judgments, emphasizing the risk of errors and the need for proper training through Judicial Academy programs. Any use of AI tools must be approved, with supervision required at all stages, and anomalies should be reported to the IT department of the High Court. This is the first instance of such directives in India. Additionally, the High Court recently annulled driving license exam reforms introduced by the State Transport Commissioner after complaints from driving schools, arguing the changes were illogical and overreached central jurisdiction. The reforms aimed to increase daily exams and modify testing vehicles, leading to a possible appeal from the Kerala government. The court’s decisions reflect a commitment to judicial integrity and accountability.
