Meta Intensifies the AI Talent Competition Against OpenAI

Meta has intensified the AI talent race by hiring Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of ChatGPT and former lead scientist at OpenAI, as chief scientist at its Superintelligence Labs. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this strategic move as part of a multibillion-dollar AI investment, which includes a $15 billion stake in Scale AI. Zhao, recognized for his contributions to GPT-4, will collaborate closely with Zuckerberg and new chief AI officer Alexandr Wang. Alongside Zhao, Meta has recruited three key researchers from OpenAI’s Zurich office, enhancing its AI team with talents previously associated with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. However, the competition for elite AI professionals remains fierce, likened to “searching for LeBron James.” Executives express mixed feelings about Meta’s aggressive poaching tactics, with concerns that money-focused strategies may undermine a collaborative culture. As the AI war rages on, both Meta and OpenAI continue vying for top talent in the ever-evolving landscape.
