Former Google AI Leader Amar Subramanya Joins Microsoft, Advocates for ‘Low Ego’ Culture Among Employees

Indian-origin AI expert Amar Subramanya has joined Microsoft as Corporate Vice President of AI after leaving Google, where he spent 16 years. Subramanya described Microsoft’s culture as “refreshingly low-ego yet bursting with ambition,” praising the collaborative work environment and innovative atmosphere, especially regarding AI initiatives like Microsoft Copilot.

With 24 years in the tech industry, including leading engineering for Google’s Gemini chatbot, Subramanya brings valuable expertise to Microsoft, potentially accelerating its AI advancements. His discussions with Microsoft leaders, including CEO Satya Nadella, inspired him regarding the company’s AI vision.

Amid a significant AI talent acquisition phase, Microsoft has also recently recruited 24 engineers from Google’s DeepMind team while facing criticism for laying off approximately 9,100 employees. Concurrently, other tech giants like Meta are making high-profile AI hires to strengthen their competitive edge in the evolving AI landscape.
