On the fifth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Centre is poised to reform the accreditation system for higher education institutions (HEIs) by implementing a binary model: ‘accredited’ or ‘not accredited.’ This change will replace the current multi-tiered grading system, focusing on uniform minimum standards rather than comparative rankings. A notable addition is the launch of the ‘Bharatiya Bhasha’ digital tool, facilitating direct translations between Indian languages without English mediation. Additionally, a Centre of Excellence in AI for education is set for formal inauguration, aimed at enhancing research and AI integration in teaching. These developments, expected to be detailed at a national event, address existing concerns over accreditation credibility and participation, following criticisms of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Initial phases will treat all institutions meeting standards equally before implementing a phased grading model based on verified performance data, ensuring accuracy through a triangulation method without NAAC’s involvement.
