In California State University (CSU) classrooms, faculty are transforming generative artificial intelligence (AI) from a disruptor into a teaching ally through innovative projects. Funded by CSU’s inaugural AI Educational Innovations Challenge, 63 faculty-led initiatives aim to incorporate AI into curricula, impacting areas from arts to general education. Elisa Sobo, an anthropology professor at San Diego State University (SDSU), emphasizes the importance of guiding students in using AI responsibly. Among the initiatives, Jamie Johns at CSU Stanislaus focuses on co-creating a one-act musical using AI, encouraging students to explore ethical questions surrounding authorship and copyright. Additionally, Sobo leads the AI-Ready Curriculum Overhaul and Redesign (ACORN) project, designed to systematically integrate AI literacy across degree programs. The goal is to ensure a coherent educational experience, highlighting the need for higher education to rapidly adapt to AI advancements. The CSU challenge is paving the way for a more thoughtful, integrated approach to AI in academia.
