OpenAI is discontinuing a feature that allowed users’ private ChatGPT conversations to be indexed by search engines like Google. With Google handling over 89% of online searches, indexed chats could be easily accessible, leading to unintended privacy breaches. OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dan Stuckey, stated that the feature posed risks of users inadvertently sharing sensitive information. Although Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other search engines could index these chats for now, efforts are underway to remove any indexed content. Many users were unaware that conversations could be searchable via Google when URLs were shared, potentially exposing private details. OpenAI had initially launched this indexing option as an experiment but is now ending it to enhance user privacy. Additionally, OpenAI is appealing a court order to preserve deleted chats. This move underscores the importance of privacy in AI interactions and user content management in the digital age.
