Police forces in England and Wales tackling grooming gangs will soon utilize cutting-edge AI tools to enhance investigations. This initiative aims to expedite processes, saving over £20 million and 16,000 hours of effort across 13 police forces. The AI applications can efficiently translate foreign texts from seized mobile phones and identify patterns within large datasets related to suspects. Funded by a £426,000 boost for the Tackling Organised Exploitation (TOEX) program, this upgrade also follows recommendations from Baroness Casey, who emphasized the need to reassess more than 1,200 cold grooming gang cases. Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, underscored the urgency of combating child sexual exploitation and ensuring justice for victims. Furthermore, the Home Secretary has mandated police forces to collect ethnicity data to rectify past shortcomings in recognizing patterns within grooming gangs. A national inquiry into these issues is forthcoming, signaling the government’s commitment to safeguarding children and improving investigation efficacy.
