YouTube Introduces AI-Driven Age Estimation Tool to Enhance Minor Protection

YouTube is introducing an AI and machine learning (ML) age estimation tool in the U.S. starting August 13, aimed at identifying underage users. This innovative system will go beyond traditional age verification by analyzing various signals such as search history and video preferences to estimate real age, rather than relying solely on stated birth dates. If users are suspected to be under 18, YouTube will activate digital wellbeing features, limit video recommendations, and disable personalized ads, thus protecting minors from inappropriate content.

While this initiative is a step forward in enhancing online safety for younger audiences, it has raised privacy concerns as users may need to verify their age through government IDs or credit cards. Despite potential inaccuracies in age classification, YouTube aims to strike a balance between safety and user experience. The rollout will initially focus on the U.S., with plans for global expansion based on its effectiveness.
