Google Enhances Gemini AI with Memory for Tailored Conversations

Google has launched an opt-in memory feature for its Gemini AI chatbot, enhancing personalisation by recalling user information like dietary and travel preferences. This update, effective from August 13, allows the chatbot to build upon previous conversations, competing directly with ChatGPT by emphasizing user loyalty through tailored interactions. Accompanying privacy measures include a Temporary Chat mode to prevent saving chats and a data editing interface for managing stored information. Users must manually activate the memory feature, as it will not be enabled by default. However, starting September 2, users will need to opt out if they prefer not to have their chats used for AI training. Privacy advocates express concerns about this approach potentially undermining trust, especially in light of regulatory scrutiny, particularly under the EU’s AI Act. Analysts suggest this reflects a broader trend towards user-centric AI systems while maintaining stringent data controls. Explore more about AI and digital diplomacy with our Diplo chatbot!
