A class-action lawsuit filed in the US against Otter.ai alleges that the AI transcription tool has been recording private conversations on platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams without participant consent. The lawsuit, submitted to the US District Court for California, claims the company uses these recordings to train its transcription service, Otter Notebook, thereby violating state and federal privacy laws. Users, including plaintiff Justin Brewer, reported serious privacy breaches, raising concerns about confidentiality. Users have expressed dissatisfaction on social media, detailing incidents where Otter recounted sensitive discussions, which affected crucial business dealings. Although Otter states that consent is required, many users contend they remain unaware of automatic recordings. The lawsuit critiques Otter’s claims of anonymizing data, arguing it may not adequately protect user privacy.
