Epic, the Electronic Health Record Leader, Launches Innovative AI Tools

Epic Systems, under the leadership of 82-year-old founder Judy Faulkner, is enhancing its presence in the AI-driven healthcare landscape. Known for its dominance in electronic health record (EHR) software, the company serves over 3,000 hospitals and 71,000 clinics, impacting 325 million patients globally. At their recent annual users group meeting in Verona, Wisconsin, Epic unveiled new AI tools designed to improve patient experiences and streamline healthcare processes.

One highlighted feature is “Emmie,” a virtual assistant that will aid in patient education prior to appointments. Future capabilities will include responding to patient inquiries, scheduling appointments, and providing billing assistance. Epic’s MyChart portal will also receive AI enhancements to answer test result questions. Additionally, Epic aims to reduce clinician burnout by automating manual chart extractions, allowing doctors easier access to patient histories. In collaboration with major health insurers, Epic is addressing prior authorization challenges to streamline patient access to necessary treatments.
