OpenAI Transforms AI Coding Tool Using Rust

OpenAI has transitioned its upcoming command-line tool, Codex CLI, from Node.js to Rust to enhance performance and security. The updated Codex CLI, an experimental programming assistant, offers chat-based interaction via ChatGPT and supports local command-line usage in both interactive and silent modes. This new Rust version eliminates the need for Node.js dependencies, providing a more accessible installation process. It incorporates advanced sandboxing for better security and improves performance due to Rust’s efficient memory handling. The decision to switch was influenced by the challenges of developing with TypeScript and Node.js. Codex CLI will be open source on GitHub, compatible with macOS, Linux, and Windows (via WSL), and able to expand with additional languages like JavaScript and Python. This move aligns with a broader trend in the tech community, as seen with Evan You’s announced Rust-based development tool, Rolldown-Vite, which significantly boosts build performance.
