OpenAI is set to establish its first office in India, aiming to tap into the country’s burgeoning AI market. This initiative follows the launch of its affordable ChatGPT Go plan, priced at ₹399 (around $4.75), designed for Indian users. Scheduled to open in New Delhi, the new office will support local relationships with businesses, developers, and academic institutions. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of this step in making AI accessible in India. OpenAI recently appointed key figures like Pragya Mishra and Rishi Jaitly to strengthen its public policy and partnerships within the region. While the Indian government actively promotes AI initiatives, OpenAI faces challenges in monetizing services in a price-sensitive market and integrating with local businesses. Despite competition from rivals like Google, Meta, and Perplexity, OpenAI’s efforts position it to benefit from India’s vast user base and tech talent, contributing to the country’s aim of becoming a global AI leader.
