OpenAI Challenges Court Order to Preserve All ChatGPT Logs, Including Deleted Conversations

OpenAI is contesting a court-preserved order requiring it to retain API conversation data, which has caused alarm among users. The company noted that users expressed concerns on social media platforms like LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter), fearing a breach of contract and suggesting clients be cautious when sharing sensitive information. Privacy advocates cautioned that all AI services powered by OpenAI should be concerned about potential data exposure. The controversy lies in users’ belief that they should control their personal information and the retention of conversations. OpenAI argues the court did not adequately consider user apprehensions prior to issuing the order. The judge, Wang, justified the preservation due to claims from news organizations about lost conversations and indicated that OpenAI could have anonymized the logs. Meanwhile, both OpenAI and The New York Times’ legal teams have refrained from commenting on the ongoing litigation.
