OpenAI has announced plans to establish its first office in New Delhi later this year, marking a pivotal expansion in India, one of its fastest-growing markets. With India now the second-largest market for ChatGPT, the company reports a fourfold increase in weekly active users over the past year. Additionally, India ranks among the top five developer markets globally and boasts the largest student user base. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized India’s potential as a global AI leader, citing its exceptional tech talent and robust developer ecosystem. The new office aims to foster relationships with government, businesses, and academic institutions while customizing products for local needs. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed this move as part of the IndiaAI Mission, which seeks to create an inclusive AI ecosystem. OpenAI is actively hiring for local roles, including account directors, and has introduced various initiatives, such as ChatGPT Go and enhanced language support in GPT-5.
