Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) commend China for its innovative use of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance nuclear safety regulation. A 24-member Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team conducted a comprehensive review of China’s nuclear facilities and safety standards over 12 days in July, at the Chinese government’s request. The team’s observations highlighted China’s effective regulatory oversight, AI advancements in decision-making, and proactive engagement with industry stakeholders. Despite their praise, the IRRS team recommended clarifying emergency protection strategies and refining inspection processes to align with IAEA standards. As China operates 59 nuclear reactors and plans to expand further, the need for trained professionals in regulatory roles is critical. IAEA officials noted China’s impressive progress in establishing a capable national regulatory body and reinforcing a robust nuclear safety culture. The final report is expected within three months, outlining additional enhancement strategies for China’s regulatory framework.
