Elon Musk and xAI Take Legal Action Against Apple and OpenAI Over Grok’s Lack of Chart Success

Elon Musk’s company, xAI, is suing Apple and OpenAI for alleged anti-competitive practices. The lawsuit claims these companies conspired to monopolize the App Store, hindering rival AI businesses like xAI. It specifically mentions that Apple’s exclusive partnership with OpenAI prevents the fair promotion of xAI’s products, such as the X app and Grok app, on the platform. Despite Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into its offerings, questions arise about potential antitrust violations, especially since competitors like DeepSeek and Perplexity have thrived in the App Store rankings. Musk had previously threatened legal action against Apple and OpenAI, which prompted rebuttals from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who accused Musk of gaming the X algorithm to benefit his interests. The lawsuit was filed in Texas, a court known for conservative leanings, suggesting a strategic choice by Musk often referred to as “judge shopping.” Apple has yet to respond, while OpenAI calls the suit harassment.
